WhatsApp, the popular messaging platform, is unveiling its latest feature, Channels. Designed as a private and efficient way to stay informed, Channels allow users to receive important updates from individuals and organizations within WhatsApp. With Channels located in a separate tab called “Updates,” users can easily access their preferred channels while maintaining a clear distinction from personal chats with friends, family, and communities.

What is it?

Channels serve as a one-way broadcast tool, empowering administrators to share a variety of content such as text, photos, videos, stickers, and polls. To simplify the process of discovering relevant channels, WhatsApp is developing a searchable directory encompassing a wide range of interests, including hobbies, sports teams, and updates from local officials. Additionally, users can access channels through invite links shared in chats, emails, or posted online.

What about information security?

Privacy lies at the core of WhatsApp’s vision for Channels. To safeguard personal information, both administrators and followers enjoy protection. As an admin, your phone number and profile photo remain confidential to followers. Likewise, following a channel does not disclose your phone number to the admin or other followers. The choice of whom to follow is entirely yours, maintaining the utmost privacy.

Similar to WhatsApp’s approach to messaging, Channels emphasize transient updates. Channel history will only be stored on servers for up to 30 days, and WhatsApp will introduce features to expedite the removal of updates from followers’ devices. Admins will also have the option to block screenshots and forwards from their channel, offering additional control over content distribution.

Moreover, admins possess the ability to determine who can follow their channel and whether their channel should be discoverable in the directory. While channels are not end-to-end encrypted by default, WhatsApp recognizes the value of end-to-end encryption for specific scenarios, such as non-profit organizations or health-related channels, and is exploring this possibility for the future.

When will it be available?

To inaugurate Channels, WhatsApp has partnered with prominent global voices and select organizations in Colombia and Singapore, where Channels will initially be available. This collaboration aims to gather valuable insights, learn from users’ experiences, and refine the overall channel experience. WhatsApp plans to expand Channels to more countries and enable anyone to create a channel in the coming months.

WhatsApp envisions further opportunities to support channel admins by enabling them to build businesses around their channels using the platform’s expanding payment services. Additionally, promoting select channels in the directory will enhance awareness and visibility for admins.

It’s important to note that private messaging among friends, family, and communities will remain WhatsApp’s primary focus. Channels represent a significant step forward, fulfilling users’ longstanding requests for this feature. WhatsApp believes that the time is right to introduce a simple, reliable, and private broadcast tool, and hopes users will delight in using it for months and years to come. Stay tuned for the exciting journey ahead with WhatsApp Channels!
