The iOS 16.4 update for iPhones has just been released by Apple. The update includes the new Voice Isolation feature for mobile calls in addition to a number of other enhancements, improvements, and bug fixes.

For those who are not aware, the Voice Isolation feature improves calling quality in busy areas by concentrating on voice and suppressing background noise. For those unaware, the Voice Isolation feature focuses on voice and suppresses background noise to offer a better calling experience in noisy environments.

When iOS 15 first released the feature, it was intended solely for FaceTime and a small number of third-party apps. However, the function is now accessible for mobile calls with iOS 16.4.

If you’re looking to enable the feature and give it a try, here are the steps you need to follow:

  • Open the Phone app on your iPhone
  • Make a call to someone
  • Once on the call, open Control Center by swiping down from the top right corner (on iPhones without Touch ID) and swiping up from the bottom (on iPhones with Touch ID).
  • Tap on the Mic option and choose the Voice Isolation option

After that, callers will be able to use the Voice Isolation function, and the iPhone will begin automatically giving speech priority over background noise.

Follow the directions above to turn it off, but instead of selecting Vocal Isolation, select Standard.

That said, before following the steps, do ensure you have the following:

  • an iPhone with iOS 16.4 or a later version
  • a functional SIM with calling capabilities
